Opal Mae West, 86, of Farmington, peacefully passed away on October 24, 2024, just shy of her 87th birthday. She was born on November 4, 1937, in Ironton, MO, to the late Harmon and Fern (Wren) Swaringim. A long-time devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Ironton, and later the First Baptist Church of Farmington, Opal's faith was a central part of her life.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, James L. West, Sr., and her two brothers, Donald Swaringim and Ronald Swaringim.
Opal is survived by her daughter, Sherry (Sheryl Sue) Runge, and husband Douglas; her son, James (Jimmy) L. West, Jr., and wife Lisa; seven grandchildren, Tracy Herwig, Marc Runge, Douglas (Heather) Runge, Jr., Lauren (Chris) Tomlin, Danielle (Robert Hashemi) West, Abby (Nick) Eastwood, and Emma West; eight great-grandchildren, Nathan, Riley, Mikey, Danny, Natalie, Mary, Andy, and Ruby; her brother, Harold (Irene) Swaringim; and brother-in-law, Howard (Angie) West.
Opal loved participating in church activities and was an avid pianist. She cherished her lifelong friendships with her high school classmates (Ironton High School Class of ’55) and enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends. However, her greatest joy was in caring for her family. Her unwavering devotion to her husband, Jim, was a profound expression of her love, standing by his side through every joy, challenge, and business endeavor. She was the heart of her family, filling her grandchildren's lives with unconditional love, support, and wisdom. As a gracious hostess, Opal always placed the needs of others before her own, embodying kindness and selflessness.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Hillview Memorial Gardens in Farmington. Arrangements are under the direction of C.Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Home - Taylor Chapel in Farmington.
