Mr. Larry E. Hughes passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017, at St. Francis Medical Center, in Cape Girardeau, at the age of 77 years, 2 months & 15 days. Larry was born Feb. 19, 1940, in Benton, Ark., & was the son of Frank Hunter & Daisy 'Hoyt' Hughes. Also preceding-in-death were; 7 sisters - Mary Johnson, Margaret Coyle, Frankie Langenegger, Becky Watkins, Helen Ernest, Kay Johnson & Bernice Hughes, in-infancy. 2 brothers - Robert & Tommy Hughes.
Larry was a US Navy Veteran and united in marriage to Sharon Lee Sims on Feb. 14, 1982. Larry started his career in Farmington, as the Economic Developer. Larry developed the Industrial Park that began with Iron Mountain Forge & what was once a cow pasture became a flourishing industrial park. Along with the development of the Industrial Park, Larry negotiated the building of the State Prison here in Farmington with the insurance that the Mental Health Hospital would remain as well; The Knights Inn & Tradition Inn followed and Pepsi moved into the Industrial Park.
After leaving Farmington, Larry accepted the City Manager position in Flat River. He was an integral part in the consolidation of Esther, Flat River, Rivermines & Elvins into the new town of Park Hills. After the vote to consolidate, all new governing rules and codes had to be turned into laws for the new town. Larry also helped design a state-of-the-art City Hall that had a heating system that was economical using a heat pump system that used the mine waters as a source of both heat and cool. He also built a new road (Parkway Drive) that tied Hwy 8 to Hwy 67 thru the Park Hills Industrial Park.
After leaving Park Hills, Larry went to Desloge, where he spent much of his time annexing areas across 67 for developing growth to a land-locked town. From Desloge, he went to Bonne Terre & developed a walk for people to enjoy or exercise around the lake. This project included lighting for use of the pathway after dark. The Desloge Park was updated & paviliions repaired as well & built with a new Park Tax, voted in by the people. Larry retired from Bonne Terre & joined his wife in running their 2-1-4 Package Store in Farmington.
Survivors Include: his wife, Sharon Hughes, of Farmington. 2 daughters - Stephanie (& Benjamin) Hughes Griffin, of San Jose, CA; and Danielle (& Brian) Hughes Boyer, of Cape Girardeau. 2 brothers-in-law, Dave Langennegger, of Rogers, Ark., & Bud Ernest. 2 grandchildren - Cash Boyer & Claire Boyer, of Cape Girardeau. Also surviving are many nieces & nephews.

at : TAYLOR Funeral Service CHAPEL, with Lenny Henson officiating.
Interment follows at : Hillview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Farmington
