Judy Linn Wood

Judy Linn Wood of Savannah, Georgia, passed away quietly at her mother's home in Kirkwood, Missouri, on March 6, 2015, after an illness. Her mother and sister were at her side. Judy, the daughter of the late John Gurman and Jane Raby Wood, was born in St. Louis County, Missouri, in 1953, the second of three siblings. She grew up in Florissant and Kirkwood, graduating from Kirkwood High School. Following high school she received a degree in Anthropology from the University of Missouri, St. Louis, and attended archaeological field school in Northern California. Upon graduation she took a job as an archaeologist with the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Omaha, Nebraska, eventually taking a similar position with the Corps in Savannah, Judy became a recognized expert in the maritime history and archaeology of the Georgia coast. She was especially fearless when pursuing surveys in the snake and alligator-infested marshes in the low country. She was responsible for, among other things, developing the recovery plan for the confederate ironclad CSS Georgia in the Savannah River, which is currently ongoing. Upon retirement in 2011, Judy remained in Savannah doing occasional consulting work and informally advising other archaeologists. She was also able to pursue her passion for knitting, working at a local knit shop and with her friends knitting warm clothing for babies, cancer patients and deployed soldiers. She will be greatly missed by her family, and friends and neighbors in Savannah, as well as her many archaeology colleagues, especially the Scotch tasters at the annual January conference. Judy is survived by her mother Jane, sister Jean, brother John and sister-in-law Jacqueline Holmes. The family would especially like to thank Judy's Savannah friends for their loving care and support, as well as BJC Hospice for their professional and loving care in her final days.
