Jennie Lou Smith, a longtime resident of the Lead Belt Area, died on July 25, 2017, at her home in St. Charles. She was born in 1925 at 312 Field St. in Flat River and attended Flat River High School, graduating with the class of 1942. She married and raised four children, while attending LPN training and working at Bonne Terre Hospital.
In 1986, after 27 years of service at the hospital, Jennie Lou retired and joined her daughters’ family traveling the world in the US Navy. She loved fun, travel, spending time with family, friends and was an avid reader and continued to love books even after macular degeneration took her sight. She completed over 1200 books on tape thru the Middendorf – Kredell Library.
Jennie Lou was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Myrtle (Stotler) McGeorge, and her siblings, Norma Ruth Vergenz, Carl (Bud) McGeorge, Grace Eilene Hakes, Aaron Thomas (A.T.) McGeorge and Muriel June Marler.
She is survived by her four children Eilene Koon (Steve) of Chesterfield, Toni Kuehnle of St. Charles, Henry Smith (Lynne) of Lander, WY, and James Smith (Charma) of Fredericktown. Jennie is also survived by seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Myrtle (McGeorge) Farmer of Bourbon.
A memorial service will be held at C.Z. Boyer and Son Chapel in Desloge, Saturday, September 2, 2017, 1:00 PM with visitation starting at 11:00 AM.
