Donald Ray Hanners, 87, of Terre Du Lac passed away February 1, 2018 at Presbyterian Manor in Farmington. He was born August 17, 1930 in St. Louis. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, and was a scholarship football player, playing for Don Faurot and participated in the 1949 Gator Bowl. He coached and taught at several Missouri High Schools - Marceline, Richmond, and in St. Louis, Maplewood and Mehlville. He a founder and was the initial President of the Missouri Athletic Directors Association. He was the first recipient of the Athletic Director of the Year Award.
He proudly served his country for 32 years in the United States Army, from which he retired as a Colonel. His unit was activated for the Korean Conflict in 1950. He received his first commission as a 2nd LT in the Army National Guard in 1956. In 1961, now 1st LT, his unit was activated for the Berlin Crisis. Major Hanners was selected as the Officer of the Year for the 21st General Hospital Army Reserve Unit in 1974.
Donald was an active member of the Terre Du Lac Country Club. He served 3-three year terms on the Board of Directors, serving as Secretary, Treasurer and President. He was a 5-time club champion. He was also a very active member of the SEMO Seniors Golf Association, holding several officer positions and other duties, including managing many tournaments.
In 1993, Donald was appointed by the governor as interim St Francios County Collector. He later served on the board that implemented the 911 call center for the county. Donald was a member of the Mineral Area Community Elks #2583.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rayford and Ama (Allen) Hanners; wife, Judith (Becker) Hanners; second wife, Shirley (Robertson) Hanners.
Donald is survived by two daughters, Susan Hanners-Stead and husband Ed of Orlando, FL and Sally Alderson and husband Steve of Fisherville, KY; two step daughters, Cindy Simms and Dana Tuell; two grandchildren, Robin Stead and Stephen Alderson.
Visitation will be Monday, February 5, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the C. Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Home in Bonne Terre. Service will be Tuesday at 11:00 AM at the C. Z. Boyer & Son Chapel in Bonne Terre. Interment with full military honors will follow at 1:30 PM at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
