Dan Smith, 69, of Bismarck, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, at his home, surrounded by loved ones. Born on November 29, 1955, in St. Louis to the late John and Mary (Graham) Smith, Dan leaves behind a rich legacy woven into the fabric of his community.
Dan began his professional journey in law enforcement as a Police Dispatcher for Washington County and later St. Francois County. His dedication and passion for public service propelled him into the role of a police officer in Flat River. By 1985, he was appointed Assistant Chief of Police in Bismarck, a role he embraced before proudly ascending to the position of Chief of Police. His contributions during this time left an indelible mark on the safety and well-being of the community he fiercely served.
After several fulfilling years in law enforcement, Dan’s career took a new direction as he became a park ranger at St. Francois State Park. This role brought him joy as he connected with nature and shared his love for the outdoors. In 2002, following the passing of his beloved parents, he relocated to Florida, where he continued to serve his community as a Correctional Officer until his well-deserved retirement.
A man of many interests and deep connections, Dan was a proud member of the Mineral Area Elks, Sons of Am Vets, and the Masonic Lodge of Bismarck. He shared a unique bond with his late brother, Bob, and their father as they helped establish a chapter of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club in Missouri. In his downtime, Dan enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and was an avid follower of Fox News.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Sharon Marie (Drawdy) Smith, he married in 1975; second wife, Nancy Marie Smith; and two brothers, John and Robert Smith.
Dan is survived by two sons, Mike Smith and wife Erin, Jimmy Smith and wife Shannon; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Smith, Lane Smith and wife Danielle, Trenton Portell and Troy Smith; one great-grandchild, Finn Smith; sister, Linda Gilliam; brother, Paul Smith; partner, Elizabeth “Liz” Ford; Amanda May and Zachary; many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends, also survive.
Visitation will be held at C.Z. Boyer and Son Funeral Home in Desloge, Thursday, March 20, 2025, from 5:00 PM until the time of service at 7:00 PM. Pastor Darrell Rhodes will be officiating. A private family interment will take place at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
