Dorothy Gerig, 90, of Park Hills, passed away July 23, 2017 at Camelot Nursing Center in Farmington. She was born September 14, 1926, in Morehouse, to the late Wesley Albert and Esther (Winkler) Deneke. Dorothy Ann moved to Flat River when her father started working for the Flat River School District. She was a Graduate of Flat River High School 1944, Flat River Junior College and Southeast Missouri State University. Dorothy married Carroll Gerig on July 31, 1949. She assisted her husband as owner in the operation of the Daily Journal, taught school in Leadwood and Flat River retiring from Central Elementary in 1992, teaching art and kindergarten. Memberships included: First United Methodist Church of Park Hill, Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teachers Association, and was a former board member of Mineral Area Arts Council. She loved and enjoyed her church, her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, her friends, traveling, sewing and knitting, art and craftwork, teaching and her students, and the St. Louis Cardinals.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carroll Gerig; sister, Eloise Deneke; brother, Milton Deneke; and sister in-law, Opal Deneke.
Dorothy is survived by three children, Robert Gerig, John (Lisa) Gerig, and Mary Ann (Mrs. Jon) Turner; five grandsons, Matthew (Jennifer) Turner, Andrew Turner, William (Rebecca) Gerig, Benjamin Gerig, and Alexander Gerig; two great-grandchildren, Briley Ruth and Laurie Ann Turner.
Visitation will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Park Hills, Thursday, July 27, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The visitation will resume at 9:00 AM, Friday, July 28, 2017 until service time at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Hillview Memorial Gardens in Farmington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church of Park Hills Memorial Fund or Deneke Scholarship at Mineral Area College.
